Pet Emergency Preparedness

Pets4Life wants to remind you to include your pets in your family’s emergency plan. Below are some tips information to help you be prepared for disasters and emergencies:

 Make a Plan

  • Have an evacuation plan for your family including pets that includes safe places where you can take them in the event of a disaster or emergency.
  • Post a sign/sticker on your front and back doors to alert first responders of your children and household pets. (Pets4Life has free copies available for you).
  • Post for caregivers the nearest emergency hospitals for family and pets.
  • Make a plan with neighbors, friends or relatives to have backup to help you care for your pets if you are unable to do so.
  • Have your pet microchipped; ensure the contact information stays up-to-date, include a secondary emergency contact who is outside your immediate area.
  • Know (and inform caregivers of) your pets’ favorite hiding places so you can find them quickly if needed

Build an emergency kit that includes:

  • Food and water
  • Portable bowls
  • Medications and first aid supplies
  • Flashlights
  • Collar with ID tag, harness, leash and sturdy carrier for each pet
  • Grooming items: brush, wipes, shampoo
  • Sanitation needs: litter box and litter, plastic bags, cleaning supplies
  • Records: vet information, vaccination records, insurance information, and a picture of you and your pet together
  • Phone/Computer charger
  • Familiar items: blankets/bedding, favorite toys

Stay Informed

  • Pay attention to local emergency alerts sent by federal, state and local public safety officials.
  • Listen to local officials when told to evacuate or shelter in place.
  • Always bring pets indoors at the first sign or warning of a storm or disaster.
  • Downloading the FEMA app can help you stay informed of weather alerts from the National Weather Service.
